Become part of the circular economy!

City of Phoenix is jumpstarting the city’s circular economy to achieve its goal of diverting 40% of the trash currently headed to landfill. We are offering unique opportunities for innovators and businesses to partner with us to transform trash into resources.  Come learn how we can transform how we look at trash and what you can do to reimagine Phoenix as a greener, more sustainable city.

Our speakers are:

Mara DeFilippis

Known as one who "gets things done" in sustainability (and usually with a smile), Mara is a Project Manager with Global Sustainability Solutions Services. Previously, Mara worked with the Energize Phoenix project at the Institute, and prior came from working on the State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) grant in the Economic Development Dept. with the City of Phoenix.  She is the founder of The Green Chamber: Greater Phoenix and was appointed CEO of the organization in 2008. The Green Chamber is the reflection of her vision of a more responsible and long-sighted, sustainable economy.

Prior to founding the Green Chamber, Mara spent several years with Merrill Lynch and a local boutique securities broker as a CPA and licensed financial advisor. During her time in the securities industry, she focused on identifying socially and environmentally responsible companies for clients who had a commitment to socially responsible investments. It is her belief that current economic shifts offer a tremendous capacity and opportunity for growth and profits in sustainable and socially conscious industries.

Mara graduated Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a degree in accounting and previously has been a licensed CPA.  She has a track record of championing sustainable economic solutions, children’s and women’s causes.  Currently she volunteers at Co-Chair of the Energy Efficiency Committee of the Arizona Energy Consortium and serves on the Energy Committee with Arizona Forward. She currently resides in Gilbert, Arizona with her amazing and spirited son, Nicholas.

John A. Trujillo

John Trujillo has 22 years of local government experience and is currently the Director for the city of Phoenix Public Works Department.  As the Public Works Director, John has managed all major programs and operations for Public Works, including facilities maintenance, energy, administration, fleet maintenance and solid waste.

John currently serves as the chair of the National American Public Works Association (APWA) Solid Waste Committee.   John holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Northern Arizona University.

Gretchen Wolfe

As a project manager for the City of Phoenix, Gretchen Wolfe is charged with creating opportunities for businesses interested in transforming the city’s trash into resources.  Her previous assignments with the city include managing the procurement process for restaurants and retail stores at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.  Before joining the city, Gretchen served in Arizona Secretary of State Betsey Bayless’ administration and blogged for the Arizona Republic.  Gretchen and her husband, Matt Hankins, were married at the State Capitol and hosted their wedding dinner in this very restaurant.

Our program will begin promptly at 12:00.  Please arrive at 11:30 - 11:45 to place your lunch order.
